Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
