Fresh analysis reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People using these medications must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to original mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a switch activating and you become starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
