An underground economy for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on communication apps, according to recent findings.
Investigational Treatment Gaining Traction Online
Retatrutide, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Followers are urged to message these profiles directly for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.
Active Commerce on Social Networks
Additionally, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where communities with numerous of participants share comparison images, administration instructions and claims of rapid UK delivery. Vendors promote the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Understanding Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help individuals reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Express Concerns
Nevertheless, physicians and chemists have warned that the distribution of what remains an unlicensed drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering substances of uncertain source.
Several professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the increasing cost of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Position and Enforcement
Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be marketed or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.
Some content creators attempt to circumvent the regulations by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but promotion and supply can still violate pharmaceutical, advertising, and customer laws, potentially leading to penalties, prosecution or imprisonment.
Platform Reaction and Content Removal
Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down violative material and prohibited associated keywords and query recommendations. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and allocating resources in enhancing enforcement strategies.
Digital Trading Activities
Research also discovered communities with up to nine thousand participants selling retatrutide using the platform's integrated search feature, which functions like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with thousands of users, populated with photos of slimming results, positive testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at home.
Within moments of entering one community, a vendor posted contact information, where most purchases occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within 48 hours. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about body mass, health issues or past usage.
Item Details and Costs
Inside these communities, posts display dark colored packages with Royal Mail labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When questioned how long a injector should last, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Safety Actions
A representative for the messaging service said it regularly moderated dangerous content on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“Individuals are injecting materials they can’t verify. Although the research behind retatrutide is sound, these online versions may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in interest to current cost increases for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, patients are using online platforms. But fake injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she explained.
Her staff has already seen individuals injured by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Statement
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may expose patients to potentially serious medical dangers”.
