Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional body horror, but beneath Together lies a intense examination about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when the couple relocate from the big city to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, blending bits of dreamlike terrors, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters face the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.
